Audition Requirements:

SINGERS

1. Prepare two (2) selections of contrasting styles and languages. One selection can be from the musical theatre or operetta repertoire. Successful applicants will keep the 2019 productions in mind when choosing selections.

2.. Applicants interested in principal roles in "Falstaff" or Opera Scenes are required to prepare four (4) selections, with at least two arias as their selections. One selection can be from the musical theatre or operetta repertoire.

3. For consideration for only the Musical Theatre Cabaret Program, prepare two (2) selections from the musical theatre or operetta repertoire. One must be a ballad and the other an upbeat.

4. For consideration for only Opera Chorus, prepare one (1) selection.

5. Stage presence, characterization, movement, and the candidate's ability to interact with the public will be taken into consideration equally with vocal and stylistic qualities. Please keep this in mind when choosing your selections.

* The Voices of the Woman Opera Composer- Lecture and Performance Presentation. Company debut Bonnie McLarty drama work "Album for a Snow Angel"

* An Evening of Art Song by Women Composers

Written when Verdi was nearly 80, the opera "Falstaff" sparkles with freshness and originality, proving that the master never even came close to losing his touch. In fact, with Falstaff, Verdi was actually venturing onto fresh ground. His only other comedy work was written more than 50 years earlier.All roles are open as well as covers. Performed in Italian. Covers will have an opportunity to present a preview of the opera.

We are celebrating our 10 year anniversary by celebrating and highlighting women composers. This includes a presentation by professor of voice Dr. Julia Broxholm entitled, "The Voices of the Woman Opera Composer" which includes a performance of scenes of various operas composed by women past and present. Also, a full recital presenting, "An Evening of Art Song by Women Composers." This season we are also premiering The Red Bench Academy, a summer vocal program for high school students. Some participants will be asked to be mentors to our high school participants.

Also included in the season at Theatre Lawrence is a major opera scenes and aria program from some of the most well-known operas, L.O.T's traditional rollicking evening of cabaret (Being Alive!). Plus, additional performances at Circle S, Signs of Life, Lawrence Public Library and other venues. Additionally, master classes and other opportunities to perform will be given.

Artists selected are expected to have roles, cover roles, and assignments learned by the first rehearsal. Lawrence Opera Theatre lives by the saying, "If music be the food of love, play on" (Shakespeare). Our mission is to fill the void of opera during the summer season in the Lawrence and Topeka area. We believe in the power of text, music and great art in opera and musical theatre.

Lawrence Opera Theatre exists to provide a broad spectrum of music, drama and cultural service to Lawrence, Douglas County, and the entire state of Kansas. We also provide a venue to singing professionals, emerging vocal artists, and community singers to perform and gain experience.
