Description

The Voice Department of the Peabody Conservatory is committed to bringing each student to his or her highest individual potential through a positive learning atmosphere, high academic standards, and a performance-centered curriculum, supporting and training every student toward a career in singing and the musical arts.

The Peabody Conservatory successfully prepares singers for professional careers. Many Peabody graduates have performed with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Washington Opera as well as with opera houses in Berlin, Moscow, Vienna, and Zurich. Some have gone into Broadway theater. Others have appeared with symphony orchestras and in recitals throughout the United States and Europe.

The art of teaching is as important in the Peabody Voice Department as the art of performing. All members of the voice faculty are committed to training outstanding voice teachers, many of whom occupy faculty positions at colleges and universities across the country.

The education program in voice requires the same vocal strengths as entry to the performance program, emphasizing a belief in the importance of well-educated teachers and mentors for the younger generation in our country’s public and private schools.

Distinguished members of the faculty, many of whom enjoy celebrated solo careers, provide expert vocal and musical coaching, technical training, study of language and diction, and special insights into the interpretation of vocal music of all periods, spanning from early music to avant-garde repertoire, with a strong commitment to the music of the 20th century. The Voice and Opera Departments offer a year-long, team-taught seminar in order to prepare singers for the realities of a career devoted to singing and/or teaching.

A comprehensive small and large ensemble program enables students to gain performing experience in the full repertoire of vocal music, oratorio, opera, vocal ensemble, early music, and orchestral masterworks. These are supplemented by intensive performance practice courses as well as opportunities to perform in weekly studio repertoire classes, departmental recitals, performances off-campus, and a wealth of performing opportunities in the Baltimore/Washington area.
