Description

Mannes is a unique place, one where you will find the flexibility and freedom to direct your development as a singer. Get rigorous classical training from a faculty of renowned and revolutionary performers, who will also help you find your place in the musical landscape of New York City.

You'll receive highly focused technical training in weekly private voice lessons, as well as opera coaching, language and diction classes, and vocal repertory electives on subjects such as the American, Spanish, and Russian art song; German lieder; the French chanson; and the Italian aria. You'll also benefit from masterclasses with visiting artists and music professionals, who support you as you polish your technique and make essential career connections.

Our Voice faculty includes a preeminent collection of musicians. You'll study with artists like Arthur Levy, Beth Roberts, Amy Burton, Bill Burden, Bonnie Hamilton, Stephen Powell, Diana Soviero, and Dan Marek, who go to great lengths to support the growth of every young artist. The same can be said for the vocal coaching faculty, including Ted Taylor, Susan Caldwell, Susan Woodruff Versage, Glenn Morton, and Joshua Greene. And you'll draw inspiration from star alums like international opera singers Frederica von Stade, Danielle de Niese, Yonghoon Lee, and Nadine Sierra.

With New York City as your classroom, you'll find ways to jump-start your career from the moment you set foot on campus. A remarkable range of performance opportunities awaits you. Opera productions run the gamut from standard works of Mozart and Verdi — performed with The Mannes Orchestra — to contemporary and experimental works such as Philip Glass' The Fall of the House of Usher and Robert Ashley's Dust.

You may find yourself performing chamber music as part of the Mannes Sounds Festival or contemporary works with the Mannes American Composers Ensemble. Musical theater flourishes at the College of Performing Arts, offering wonderful opportunities to collaborate with students from the School of Drama and the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, either in fully staged productions or as a member of the student-founded musical theater group 13th and Broadway. Explore, discover, choose, experiment, and define yourself as an artist. Throughout New York City, find new and inspired ways to expand who you are as an artist and performer, getting the chance to learn and perform with some of the world's leading musicians.
