Singing in Boston

As I am writing this, I am currently en route to Boston for the CS Competition and Convention, and I am so excited! I know that convention classes & part of the competition are already underway, and I can’t wait to be a part of it. My friend Emily sang earlier today for the second round, and I will be seeing her tomorrow to hear all about how it went. My scheduled time for the second round isn’t until tomorrow afternoon, so I will be able to get a good night’s sleep and be ready to sing tomorrow (I should get to the bus station at around 10 this evening). While everyone else has flocked to beaches and barbecues, I will be soaking up Opera – a weekend of singing, networking, etc. I have my eye on a few convention classes that I want to attend tomorrow and Sunday, which I will be sure to write about as the weekend progresses. This will mark my first time participating in the convention/competition, so I’m making sure I experience all of it!

Also, I’m writing this so late because I just spent the last two hours on this bus ride listening to coachings I had this week and mentally going through music and characterization. Many people don’t realize it, but there is so much that a musician can practice mentally without actually using his or her instrument. I went through phrasing, diction, rhythms, etc, and I feel ready for tomorrow, both mentally and vocally. Quick shout-out to my friend Beth, who is sitting next to me right now and who will be my sanity during this trip… and also my drinking buddy when the competition is over.

Will update as often as I can!

For more than 20 years Classical Singer magazine has been an invaluable resource for singers.  Monthly articles feature current and former opera stars who share their secrets of success, as well as their stories of struggle and inspiration.   Classical Singer magazine began in 1988 as The New York Opera Newsletter. For years it provided in-depth insights about the New York opera scene to its subscribers. But interest in the newsletter grew rapidly and the demand for more information by opera and classical singers from around the world stimulated a transformation.   Get a free trial of Classical Singer magazine at .www.classicalsinger.com/freesub.php.
