Wolfgang Lockemann has advocated and practiced the sort of textual work he describes in this article with Lieder singers and pianists for more than 25 years. Many people know him as a long-time faculty member of the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. He is artistic director and cofounder of Lied Austria—The Step Beyond Singing, a summer program integrating textual work, musical coaching, and all aspects of voice and healthy singing.
