Bio

Dr. Sonya G. Baker has been heard in concert nationally and internationally, including a debut at Carnegie Hall with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, performances in Havana, Cuba with the Yale Alumni Chorus, and in Spain with the American Spiritual Ensemble. Her debut recording, SHE SAYS, features art songs of American Women composers, and her lecture recital on Marian Anderson’s historic Easter concert has been presented nationwide. Baker’s students have appeared in performance both on Broadway and in major opera houses. Her leadership in the arts includes two Governor-appointed terms as board member for the Kentucky Arts Council and two elected terms as Kentucky Governor for NATS. With a dedication to educating young people in the arts, Baker is a former university administrator and former faculty member of high school summer Governor’s School programs in both Kentucky and Virginia. She holds degrees from Yale, Indiana, and Florida State Universities and is currently Professor of Voice at James Madison University.
