Bio

Joanie Brittingham is a singer, voice teacher, actor, and writer, as well as the editor of Classical Singer Magazine. She is the author of the book Practicing for Singers, and she has contributed to numerous music history and general music textbooks. She holds M.M. degrees in Voice and Music History and Literature, and a B.M. in Vocal Performance with a minor in theatre. Brittingham teaches both classical and musical theatre styles of singing and has a special love for new music by living composers. She has taught students from ages 5-80 and is currently teaching privately in New York City. She has previously served as a faculty member at Molloy University, University of Mobile, and Hill College.

As a performer, Brittingham has been praised for her “dramatic versatility” (Opera News), “meltingly beautiful” interpretations (Forbes), “lovely soprano” and (New York Times), “captivating stage presence” (New York Classical Review), and “full-bodied voice” (Tulsa World), all while demonstrating “strength and resistance” (Opera Wire) throughout her “outstanding solo work” (New York Concert Review). Brittingham has performed at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, and Symphony Space and with Riverside Theatre, the New Ohio Theatre, Fresh Squeezed Opera, New Amsterdam Opera, IconoClassic Opera, Hartford Opera Theater, and Chelsea Opera, the New Works Festival with OPERA America, American Lyric Theatre, Opera Lancaster, Light Opera Oklahoma, and VHRP Live.

She is the librettist for the opera Serial Killers and the City, which premiered with Experiments in Opera, and was performed as part of New Wave Opera's Night of the Living Opera. Brittingham’s writing, which has been described as “breathless comedy” and having “real wit” (New York Classical Review), has been included in serials and anthologies, including Black Cat Tales, Past-Ten, The Last Girls Club, Wild Garlic, and Eternal Haunted Summer.
