Description

The successful Austrian opera singer Johann Michaël Vogl (1768-1840) enjoyed great fame in his time. He was an exceptionally gifted man: broadly educated and very well-read, mastered the classical languages and Greek philosophy. In the later part of his career, Vogl developed into one of the first specialized lieder singers. Among his admirers was Franz Schubert (1797-1828), who had long cherished the desire to come into contact with this authority. At the initiative of his circle of friends, the singer and composer met in 1817, during which Vogl became acquainted with his lieder. He knew immediately that he was dealing with exceptional music and a friendship and close collaboration developed between the two. Vogl performed the lieder, many of which Schubert had specifically composed with him as a singer in mind, during the so-called Schubertiades, where his interpretations made a great impression. Vogl assisted the young Schubert with advice and support and became one of his most active and important promoters.

In short, Vogl was successful in opera, concert singing and song and also had an eye for talent: a life for the art of singing!

Inspired by JM Vogl, the foundation aims to promote the art of singing by providing a stage for it, as well as supporting promising talent in their careers.
