Description

The Städtische Bühnen Frankfurt are the largest municipal theater company in Germany. They were converted into a GmbH in 2004 (the City of Frankfurt am Main is the sole shareholder) and consist of two artistic divisions: opera and drama.

Bernd Loebe has been the director of the opera since 2002, and Anselm Weber has been the director of the theater since the 2017/2018 season. Together they form the management of Städtische Bühnen Frankfurt am Main GmbH.

The theater in Frankfurt has a long and traditional history: the first permanent theater venue, the Comoedienhaus, was built in 1782 on the north side of what was then Theaterplatz (today Rathenauplatz).

When this became too small for the needs of an ever-expanding city, a new opera house was built on Opernplatz in 1880 (today's Alte Oper) and in 1902 a new theater was built on Gallustor (since Theaterplatz, today's Willy-Brandt-Platz). In 1963, the so-called "double theater complex", which once again housed both divisions together, opened its doors.
