Butler University Vocal Competition Competition
Description
The Butler University Vocal Competition encourages excellence in solo vocal performance. It is an opportunity for high school singers in 9th through 12th grade to perform for and learn from Butler University voice faculty and guest judges. If the $50 registration fee is prohibitive, please contact music@butler.edu.
Round 1 of the competition will be online, with registration and videos due by January 15, 2024. Semi-Finals and Finals Rounds will place in-person on Saturday, February 10, 2024 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, IN alongside workshops, masterclasses, and recitals with Butler faculty and students.
Cash prizes for First Place ($500), Second ($400), and Third ($300) place as well as a new $200 IDEA Prize and a $100 Encouragement Award for a high school ninth or tenth grader.
The $200 IDEA Prize (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) will be awarded to the singer who gives the strongest performance of an Art Song or Musical Theatre piece by an artist/artists from historically underrepresented communities. BUVC participants are encouraged to select works by artists who hold marginalized identities, including composers and writers from the African Diaspora, Asian and Pacific Islanders, self-identified LGBTQ+ artists, Latinx artists, women composers, and other creatives whose voices have not been equitably represented on the concert stage. We are excited to help nurture a generation of performers that tell stories from every perspective.
All semi-finalists will receive a complimentary sample lesson with a voice faculty member. High school seniors can use the competition as their audition for admission as a voice major at the Butler University School of Music.
