Description

Portland Opera To Go, Portland Opera’s flagship outreach program is seeking singers for its Fall 2025 English-language adaptation of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love.

Portland Opera To Go (POGO) tours throughout Oregon and SW Washington with 50-minute youth operas that are designed to be lively, accessible, and entertaining for school-age and family audiences. In addition to performing, POGO artists engage students in classroom activities and are required to assist with the set up and strike of the touring set. POGO performs up to two times a day, possibly in different venues. In addition, POGO artists may sing concerts as assigned by the Manager of Education & Community Engagement.

This charming adaptation by Kristine McIntyre is reset in the American Midwest during the 1930s. Portland Opera To Go encourages opera artists from all backgrounds and ethnicities to audition for our productions and believes in the power of representation and inclusion in our casts for our audiences—in particular our youth audiences!

We are seeking the singers for the following roles:

Nemorino, tenor, a farm hand on Adina’s farm, deeply in love with her.

Adina, soprano, a wealthy landowner, independent minded.

Belcore, baritone, a pilot who crash-landed on Adina’s farm.

Dr. Dulcamara, bass, a traveling patent medicine salesman and a charming fraud.

Dates of the contract are as follows: September 8 through December 5, 2025, inclusive. Singers receive a weekly salary of $800.00, plus a housing allowance of up to $2,000 to defray the cost of housing in Portland and a travel stipend of up to $500 for travel to and from Portland, Oregon (both upon presentation of receipts). In addition, when singers are more than 150 miles outside of the Portland Metro Area, they will be provided lodging and paid a $80.00 per day meal reimbursement.

Interested singers should send their headshot, resume and three recent video recordings of themselves (within the last six months) singing. Recordings should include two arias in contrasting styles, sung in their original languages, and a musical theater selection or jazz standard in English. We request that one of your aria selections be by a bel canto composer and show their ability to sing coloratura. Please submit your cover letter and materials to Alexis Hamilton, Manager of Education and Community Engagement at ahamilton@portlandopera.org. All interested candidates should have a valid visa enabling them to work in the United States.

The deadline for initial applications is March 14, 2025. After initial screening, candidates may be asked to audition in person. Finalists will have an interview with the Manager of Education and Community Engagement. If you have any questions, please contact Alexis Hamilton at ahamilton@portlandopera.org.
