The Portland State University School of Music and Theater seeks a full-time tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor to direct PSU’s opera program, teach applied voice, and give lectures in the vocal area. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated track record in performing in and/or producing opera at the national or international level. A knowledge of the standard operatic repertoire and a close familiarity with operatic languages is essential to this position, as well as a passion for working on new operas and mounting progressive productions. In addition to producing operas and leading opera workshop as well as other vocal area classes, the candidate will need to have a highly successful track record as a private teacher of applied voice. A thorough understanding of the developing classical voice is essential not only in the private teaching role, but also in picking and casting operas that are appropriate to the health and success of a young and diverse student body. It is of vital importance that the candidate has excellent people skills toward handling the successes and disappointments of a wide variety of vocal students, working closely and collaboratively with colleagues on PSU operas, interfacing constructively with our acclaimed choral program, and promoting the opera program with donors and community partners. The candidate will demonstrate a successful track record, as well as enthusiasm for recruiting students locally and nationally.
