As the primary musical leader of the church, the Minister of Music is directly responsible for all aspects of the church’s music ministry and serves as a resource to support, foster and coordinate the musical and spiritual life of the congregation. He/She must demonstrate their understanding that worship is not a performance but is a carefully choreographed expression of praise directed to God and work toward the overall vision of the church. As a member of the leadership staff, the
Minister of Music works with the Senior Pastor, church leadership, choir leadership and numerous volunteers (choir members and others) to plan and coordinate worship services, special concerts, musicals, funerals, weddings and other related activities.
Salary Range: $60,000 - $90,000 plus benefits, based upon qualifications.
Requirements:
Educational Requirements:
A minimum of a Bachelor of Music degree from a well-recognized College/University School of Music is required with an emphasis on individual voice training as well as choral ensemble, with proficiency at the piano and organ. Accompaniment skills necessary as well as above average performance capabilities.
Work Experience:
A minimum of at least five (5) years in Church Music is required including experience with all age levels in the music ministry.
Accountability:
The Minister of Music reports directly to the Senior Pastor and shall ultimately be responsible to the Session, through the Personnel Team and will be evaluated annually by the Senior Pastor in consultation with the Personnel Team.
Qualifications:
A Christ-centered faith, cooperative attitude and good people skills is essential;
Possess excellent skills in the areas of organ, piano/keyboard and voice performance; choral preparation and planning; choral, orchestral and handbell conducting; proficiency in vocal pedagogy; and a thorough understanding of the organ and its repertoire;
Competency to train musicians of all ages and experience levels;
Commitment to the liturgical tradition of worship with a broad knowledge of the sacred and secular music repertoire;
Excellent leadership, organizational and communication skills;
Administrative ability to recruit, lead and train an effective staff and group of volunteers;
Self starter who works well independently, with ability to take direction from and listen to Senior Pastor and other church leadership;
Demonstrates discernment, wise judgement, confidentiality and a professional manner at all times and,
Computer skills and a working knowledge of media and audio/visual are helpful.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrates a pastoral presence through spiritual growth and personal ministry with the members of their community;
Develop a family-type relationship with others through the music ministry of church and have close relationships with all pastors in the church, the Personnel Team, the Music and Worship Team (of Session), Choir Leadership, the Worship Team (Contemporary band), Director of Youth and College Ministries, Chapel Singer (6th-8th grade) and Kirk Singer (9th-12th grade) members and parents, Cathedral Choir (adults) members and volunteers;
Oversee all aspects of regular rehearsals, activities and inclusion in worship and special events of the Chapel Singers, Kirk Singers, Cathedral Choir and handbell choirs;
Oversee the full musical productions (including teaching, accompanying and performing) of the Chapel Singers and Kirk Singers. Consideration of summer concert tours for Kirk Singers and/or Chapel Singers in collaboration with the Minister of Youth;
Recruitment of choir/handbell members for all groups;
Correlate the worship service music with the preaching minister as it pertains to the service music: choral and/or instrumental music and hymns;
Oversee the relationships between all aspects of worship ministry from traditional to contemporary worship;
Prepare weekly bulletin materials;
To develop and maintain an annual series of Special Events or concerts;
Train and oversee musicians of all types to provide music for the congregation in its worship services, weddings, funerals and other programs. Provide musical consultation for those who are planning these events;
Create and maintain a working budget within the specifications from the leadership of the church;
Act as liaison between the Session, the Worship Team, the congregation and other professional musicians in the community;
Be a resource person in music in conjunction with Spiritual Formation and Christian Education;
Evaluate the staff and supervise both staff and volunteers in the Music Department;
Remain aware of new developments in church music through continuing education and involvement in professional organizations;
Maintain a social media presence and handle all advertising and marketing materials for the Music Ministry of First Presbyterian Church and,
Other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor.
