Toby leads a life full of deprivation on the brink of social decline. Social humiliation is an everyday companion. He keeps himself afloat by running errands. Since the death of his beloved wife Audrey, only his daughter Meg has brought light into his dreary life. Normally, the sound of the church bells is also a comfort to Toby. But today, just before Christmas, his encounters with the contemptuous Justice of the Peace Alderman and the autocratic member of the government Bowley pull the rug out from under his feet. He lives through all his fears in a nightmare. The ghost of his deceased wife and finally the Christmas bells give him hope and courage to live. Christmas, which is also the day of his daughter Meg's wedding to the young judge Richard.
