IU Southeast School of Arts and Letters is seeking Assistant Professor of Music Education/Choral Music.
This position is a full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music Education/ Choral Music, beginning August 2021. Teaching responsibility is 12 credit hours per semester (3 of those credits are traditionally credited towards research). Primary duties include directing the Concert Choir and Community Chorus, teaching music education courses and co-supervising Music Education Majors in student teaching and field experience placements within our BS in Music: Music Education degree. Duties include teaching courses related to choral music and music education studies such as Methods and Materials for Conducting Choral Music, as well as other music education methods and conducting classes. Other subjects taught, including possible applied studio instruction, will be based on expertise. Advising students and engaging in other administrative duties related to further developing the Music Education program (e.g. attending recruiting events, giving recommendations to program coordinator and Director of Music Education regarding part-time instructors for music education courses, and assistance with assessment and licenses) will be important components for this position.
Required Qualifications: earned Doctorate degree (or ABD with degree completed by August 10, 2021) in Music Education with a focus in choral music from an accredited university, three to five years of teaching experience in the schools (k-12) within the last 10 years, and experience conducting at the collegiate, community chorus or professional levels. Also required is evidence of leadership potential (e.g. positions held, experience with coordinating programs, directing student projects, and/or grant development).
Preferred/Desired Qualifications: Two years of college teaching experience (graduate teaching assistantships with substantial teaching responsibility acceptable). The successful candidate will provide evidence of administrative experience in addition to excellence in teaching and choral conducting; any experience in elementary music would be a plus.
