Description
Howard University seeks an Assistant Chair, Department of Music.
The Assistant Chair is appointed to a 10-month term annually from August 16th through May 31st at the pleasure of the President. The recommendation of a candidate for assistant chair is initiated by the Department Chair. This recommendation must be approved by the Dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts (CABCoFA), the Provost and Chief Academic Officer, and ultimately the President. If a sitting Assistant Chair is up for reappointment, faculty evaluations are also considered. The performance of the Assistant Chair will be evaluated annually by the Department faculty, Chair, and Dean, with recommended action submitted to the Provost.
The Assistant Chair reports directly to the Department Chair. The Assistant Chair position is renewable annually, and there are no term limits.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Assist the Chair in managing the following responsibilities:
* The Assistant Chair will perform the administrative duties assigned by the Chair.
* The duties of the Assistant Chair primarily involve administration of student affairs.
* Serve as a liaison to the University Office of Admission, the Office of the Registrar, and the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
Coordinate Departmental endowed, restricted, and institutional scholarship recommendations.
* Oversee Department recruitment and retention activities and initiatives.
* Oversee due process for students, as described in current Department and College-wide handbooks.
* Ensure proper maintenance of student academic records.
Assess student outcomes.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Candidates for Assistant Chair must be a full-time faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor (tenured) or higher at the time of appointment. Special exceptions may be made for full-time faculty members at the rank of Master Instructor. The Assistant Chair must hold a graduate degree in a concentration offered by the Department. A closely related discipline is also acceptable. Three (3) years of professional teaching experience is required. Exemptions from any of the minimum requirements can only be made by the recommendation of the Chair to the Dean, Provost, and President.
