Goucher College Teaching Job
Description
The Music Program at Goucher serves a relatively new music minor as well as the general student population, with two choral ensembles and an array of course offerings and musical ensembles including an orchestra, jazz ensemble, and African drum ensemble, as well as interdisciplinary seminars in the college's core curriculum. The choirs are a significant part of the life of the college, performing at college ceremonies and events, and forming a community within the college community, much like an athletic team. As part of a small program at a liberal arts college, the Director of Choral Activities has an important role in shaping the program through curricular development and programming, as well as the mentorship of students that characterizes Goucher's education.
The Director of Choral Activities oversees a choral program that has historically featured two ensembles: the Goucher Choral Society (40-50 singers pre-COVID) and the Chamber Singers (16-24 voices pre-COVID), a smaller ensemble comprised of members of the Goucher Choral Society. They will also have an opportunity to teach other courses as appropriate. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active professional practice in performance, scholarly, and/or creative work, and to be visible regionally and beyond, partly as a recruitment initiative for the college. Service responsibilities include the day-to-day work of maintaining the program, curricular development, and participation in college governance committees and other initiatives. The teaching load is 20 credits per academic year.
Required qualifications, skills, and proficiencies:
Terminal degree in choral conducting (ABD with an expected completion by August 2022).
Experience directing student and other choral ensembles featuring developing voices.
Strong piano skills. An accompanist is available for most but not all rehearsals, and extensive sectional rehearsals are generally needed.
Familiarity with the liberal arts environment and the role of music ensembles in a college community.
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and musical activities.
Interest in the expansion and diversification of repertoire for such ensembles.
An active professional agenda of performance, scholarship, or creative work in the field of choral music.
Review of applications will start March 21 and continue until the position is filled.
