Chapman University seeks applications for the position of a tenure–track Assistant Professor of Opera Direction in the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music in the College of Performing Arts, beginning August 2022.

This position will provide the opportunity to re-imagine the opera program of today, and to make space for new and different voices. The Spring production, alternately opera/operetta or musical theatre, is presented in the Musco Center for the Arts, an on-campus venue that was acoustically designed by the legendary Yasuhisa Toyota of Nagata Acoustics. Arts critics have remarked on “the impeccable sophistication of the hall’s acoustics” and declared it “an ideal opera house, potentially the best in the West and maybe even something more.”

Doctorate preferred; a Master’s degree in Opera, Voice or related subject, or commensurate experience and at least two years teaching at the collegiate level or commensurate experience in a Young Artist Program is required.

The successful applicant will have:

1. A Demonstrated track record directing and producing opera in academic and/or professional settings.

2. Knowledge of standard operatic and musical theater repertoire, as well as the vision to mount progressive and/or new productions, especially those by underrepresented composers.

3. A track record of program-building and recruitment of students from High School and Community College programs into university and/or Young Artist programs.

Qualified candidates are invited to electronically submit the following:

1. Chapman University faculty employment application.

2. Letter of interest.

3. Curriculum vitae.

4. Teaching philosophy statement.

5. Diversity and inclusion statement.

6. Three current letters of recommendation including contact information (phone and email).

Materials and inquiries about the position should be directed to:

Dr. Amy Graziano, Chair, Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music

Please include "Opera Direction Position” as the email subject line.

Timeline: Prospective candidates are encouraged to submit their materials as soon as possible. This position will remain open until filled.
