LOCAL AUDITIONS FOR HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH

Cardinal Stage is now accepting submissions for our upcoming production of Hedwig and The Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. The production will be helmed by John Jarboe (Director) and Dan Kazemi (Musical Director). Seeking Bloomington/Indianapolis-area Equity and Non-Equity actors for the roles listed below.

Performers of all gender identities, expressions, races and ethnicities, and abilities are encouraged to submit for the role with which they identify.

1st Rehearsal – May 17th

Performances – June 9th – 26th at the Waldron Arts Center

Seeking actors for the following roles:

Hedwig: Searching for a genderful performer to interpret the character of Hedwig, the “internationally ignored song stylist.” Performers must have comfort with direct address, audience interaction, and improvising within a structure. Hedwig is a musical genius torn apart by a traumatic childhood, The Cold War, the gender binary, and her relationship with Tommy Gnosis, her music-stealing soulmate. She is a survivor, a seeker of truth, and a tastefully tasteless storyteller with a thin, if nonexistent filter.

Looking for a strong rock vocalist with vulnerability, heart, cutting wit, and a punk spirit. Performers must be comfortable with playing with different gender expressions and working with the creative team to navigate brilliant material written in the mid-late 1990s being received in a 2020s context.

Yitzhak: Searching for a genderful performer to take on the role of Hedwig’s “man Friday through Thursday.” The reluctant foil to Hedwig’s front person, Yitzhak is a wildly talented aspiring drag queen, “the most famous drag queen in Zagreb,” whom Hedwig marries and forces to give up their wig and sing back ups in exchange for immigration to the United States. Yitzhak, longing to be in full drag glory, is constantly navigating Hedwig’s ego. They are a firework that is constantly being put out and always eager to relight in the spotlights glow. They are also tied to Hedwig legally and through shared trauma. Performers need to be comfortable with improv and scripted material. Performers must be adept at harmony singing, and ideally be a rock vocalist with plenty of range. Vocal pyrotechnics are welcome and encouraged.

To request an audition, please send a short cover letter, along with a photo and performance resume to casting@cardinalstage.org by Monday 2/28/22.

Performers with video links to drag queen/king performance are encouraged to include 1-2 links in their cover letter.

All auditions and callbacks will be held via video submission or Zoom.
