Discover Cambodia’s lost surf rock scene through the eyes of a young

Cambodian American woman and her father. This thrilling story toggles back and forth in time, as father and daughter face the music of the past. Featuring actor/musicians, playwright Lauren Yee brings to vivid life

the Cambodian rock scene of the 60s and 70s, a movement cut short by the Khmer Rouge’s brutal attempt to erase the music (and musicians) once and for all. “A fierce, gorgeous, heartwarming, comedic fairy tale… Yee has made her characters so joyfully and ridiculously human that it’s impossible not to identify with them.”

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Auditions will consist of readings from the script and a vocal/instrumental audition.

Please bring your instrument to auditions and be prepared to sing and accompany yourself in an excerpt from the style of the show (surf rock).

You are not required to perform a piece from the production.

Sides will be provided for perusal upon scheduling your audition appointment.

Due to the close proximity of the cast, everyone must be fully vaccinated and boosted to be cast in this production. Please bring proof of full vaccination to auditions.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

CHUM – male, portrayed at 51 and 18, Cambodian, Neary’s father

NEARY – female, 26, Cambodian American journalist (also plays SOTHEA)

TED – male, 25, Thai Canadian, Neary’s boyfriend (also plays CADRE, LENG)

DUCH – male, ageless, Cambodian

ROM – gender-neutral, 20-30’s, Cambodian (also plays JOURNALIST)

POU – gender-neutral, 20-30’s, Cambodian (also plays S-21 GUARD)

We are looking for actor/musicians to portray the above characters, and to create the rock band whose music drives the production forward musically. Chum, Neary/Sothea, Ted/Leng, and Duch serve mainly as actors. Rom and Pou serve mainly as musicians.
