More about Restoration, Revival, and Regeneration

Disruptive and potentially life-threatening events litter the historical landscape of 17th- and 18th-century Europe. The Second Plague Pandemic, which had been ravaging Europe with bubonic plague since the 14th century, continued to take lives in outbreaks such as the 1679 Great Plague of Vienna (and the one in Prague two years later). A seemingly endless series of wars, including the Thirty Years War which ended in 1648 and the War of Spanish Succession which ended in 1713, killed hundreds of thousands and ravaged the lands. And natural disasters, such as the fire which burned down the city of Passau in 1662, resulted in death and destruction.

People who have been through events like these see the world with new eyes. They’ are grateful to have survived, mourn what has been lost, and more keenly appreciate the things which bring beauty and joy to their lives. For many of us, music is a really powerful source of beauty and joy, and a really important part of how we move forward from challenging times. Our 2022 Baroque Workshop will be a celebration of how much we cherish being together to make and hear music with each other.

We are currently planning to only offer in-person string, vocal and keyboard instruction (pitch at A=415 Hz). However, our wind and brass faculty will be offering online lectures and classes in this year of transition. Stay tuned for more!

To attend this workshop, proof of “up to date” vaccination against COVID-19 will be required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “up to date means a person has received all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when eligible.” For additional policies for SFEMS, please visit our COVID-19 protocol page.

Upon registration, please send proof of vaccination (in .pdf or .jpg form) to workshops@sfems.org.

Because of continued logistical challenges of the pandemic, SFEMS will be unable to offer group accommodations for the 2022 summer workshops. Our workshop directors and staff did not undertake this decision lightly, and based on your feedback, we hope that this information about accommodations and transportation will ease your planning as for what we expect will be a joyous return to in-person workshops.

As the workshops draw nearer, we will make adjustments as pandemic restrictions ebb and flow. We ask for your patience as we navigate these confusing times together.

SFEMS offers a nationally renowned series of summer workshops, first held in 1980, taught by acclaimed artists to over 300 amateur and professional musicians. SFEMS offers one of the most comprehensive summer early music programs in the United States, led by a faculty of international artists in residence. The Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque, Recorder, and Classical workshops offer instrumental and vocal master classes, lectures, coached ensembles, and recitals and provide opportunities for musicians and dancers at a variety of levels to improve their ensemble skills, performance techniques, and teaching abilities.
