SING THE WORDS!
Presented by George Shirley
Proper pronunciation of words produces expressive singing. Proper pronunciation can make it appear as though the singer understands and is deeply invested in the significance of those words even when, as is too often the case, the meaning of a phrase has not been fully grasped by the singer. Poetic language tends to be somewhat obscure making it difficult to comprehend, e.g., “The late year lies down the north, all is healed, all is health…” (James Agee from “Sure On This Shining Night”). Poetry, the language of imagery, must be painstakingly translated to gain ownership of the poet’s intent. We will focus on singing the words, not syllables alone.

But it is only one of the many unexpected and wonderful twists in this marvelous . . . musical.” —Robert Viagas, Theater Writer
