Along with studio and ensemble, the third essential element of our curriculum is the strongest possible basis in musical skills and knowledge. We have an internationally known program in eurhythmics and solfege, complemented by outstanding offerings in history and theory. LTI offers a degree which focuses especially on sung theatre: the Bachelor of Musical Arts in Lyric Theatre. Students in this degree program follow a curriculum which includes substantial acting and dance instruction, and which trains the singing actor in the repertoire and techniques of all genres of sung theater. Students who love sung theatre and aspire to be the generators of that work—as lyricists and composers, working with performers and designers in ways that blend the traditional disciplines, or developing their skills as stage and music directors, are strongly encouraged to consider the BMA in Lyric Theatre.
Studies at the graduate level focus on vocal development, linguistic and musical excellence, and stage experience. We emphasize the unity of all sung theatre and the thorough preparation necessary for excellence in all styles: vocal and physical health; score study and musicianship; a careful reading of text in all languages; dance and acting experience and training; somatic awareness. Illinois boasts superb academic resources, a world-class Performing Arts Center, and one of the best performing arts libraries in the world.
