Center Stage : Cordell Fannin, Soprano


What has been a career highlight up until now?

The biggest highlight of my career so far was when I was asked to cover the role of Mimì in La bohème … It was the first time I learned an entire role. I never performed [the role], but doing an entire role in rehearsal was amazing.

What are your goals for the next five years? The next 10 years?

In the next five years, I would like to have sung on Broadway, and have been in the chorus at [New York] City Opera or the Met. Ten years down the road I want to sing at the Met in a leading role, and to have performed in an original role on Broadway.

What do you listen to most often on the radio?

NPR [National Public Radio]

What is your dream role?

The title role in Salome by [Richard] Strauss. Having danced ballet professionally, I want to do a role that showcases that ability.

How do you handle rejection?

Take it in stride and know that it wasn’t meant to be. I think about what went well at the audition, and [what] I need to work on. I use it as a learning experience to help me get better the next time.

How do you balance career and family?

I have moved from Illinois to New York, and away from my family. I call my parents and e-mail every other night, just to check how things are going.

Who is your favorite singer (other than yourself!)?

Renée Fleming. It just seems so effortless for her. She can convey any role … so easily. It’s awe-inspiring.

What is your favorite techno tool?

My laptop. I have Finale and Cakewalk on it, [and] I am able to write, arrange, and record right on my computer.

Do you have a motto or phrase to live by?

Don’t waste time talking about it—do it.
