Center Stage : Claire Mailhot, Soprano

What have your career highlights been, so far?

Performing my first professional recital in my hometown after returning from two years of study in Paris. Making my professional opera debut with the Bronx Opera in La bohème this year.

What are your goals for the next five years? The next 10 years?

To refine my technique with my voice teacher, Julian Kwok. To participate in a Young Artist Program, to sing a major role with a professional company, to do the MET auditions. In 10 years, I want to be singing in “A” houses.

When you turn on the radio, what do you
listen to?

Latin jazz; James Taylor.

What is your dream role, and why?

I love Pamina. “Ach, ich fuhls” is the most heartbreaking aria. I think that she is such a beautiful character—so noble, honest, and vulnerable. On the flip side, I love Despina, because she’s so much fun.

How do you handle the inevitable rejection that is part of a singer’s life?

I think of it all as a learning experience. Any audition, even a bad audition, is valuable, because it’s an opportunity to perform. I also remind myself that I’m in this for the long haul. My fiancé … always reminds me that this is a marathon, not a sprint.

What is your favorite article you’ve read in Classical Singer, and why?

I just read the article about whether or not to go to grad school. It is very relevant for me because I opted to study abroad in Paris for two years after graduating from college. I am now weighing the idea of going to grad school. There are a lot of things to consider, and the article helped to give me a better understanding of what grad school could do for me, as well as some of the advantages of doing what I’m doing now—a la carte training.

Who is your favorite singer?

The first classical singer that I loved was Cecilia Bartoli. She sings with such passion and her voice is so versatile. She is the consummate artist to me. I saw her sing from the nosebleed seats in Paris, and it was incredible.

What is your favorite techno tool that you use as a singer?

I love my iPod. It’s essential on the subway.

Do you have a motto by which you live?

Do what you love and the money will follow.
