Bio

Mezzo-soprano, Mia Athey, is a multifaceted performer, telling stories through opera, musical theatre and concert music. She has been praised for her “plush mezzo” and “sincere delivery” by Opera Today.

Last summer, she made her professional debut as a Young Artist with The Glimmerglass Festival in the world premiere of Blue as Girlfriend/Congregant #3 and covered the Mother. At Glimmerglass, she also made her dancing debut in Show Boat, while performing in the Ensemble and covered Susanna in The Ghosts of Versailles.

In her first season as a Resident Artist at Minnesota Opera, Mia portrayed the roles of Maidservant 2 in Elektra and the Chorus in the world premiere of Edward Tulane. She covered the Minskwoman in Flight, Nellie/Fancy Doll #3 in Edward Tulane, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and was the study cover for Rosina in The Barber of Seville.

This summer Mia will return to The Glimmerglass Festival as a Young Artist to portray Dorabella in Cosi?, a new adaptation of Mozart’s beloved favorite, and Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music.

In the fall, Mia is excited to return to Minnesota Opera in her second season as a Resident Artist to portray Olga in Eugene Onegin, Tisbe in La Cenerentola while covering Angelina, Mrs. Massey in The Shining and reprise the role she created of Girlfriend/Congregant #3 in Blue.

A native of Hyattsville, Maryland, Mia received her Master of Music in Voice from The College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) where she performed as Tina in Dinner at Eight, the Baroness in Candide, and La Maestra delle Novizie in Sour Angelica in CCM’s Opera Studio. In Cincinnati, Mia expanded her concert repertoire singing in performances of Stravinksy’s Les Noces, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Neue liebeslieder by Brahms, Handel’s Messiah and as a soloist in CCM’s Bernstein’s Legacy Concert. In 2018, Mia won 4th place in the Three Arts Scholarship Fund in the Vocal Music Division.

Mia graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Music in Voice from The Catholic University of America. Other roles performed by Mia include, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, La Zelatrice in Suor Angelica, L’opinion Publique in Orphée aux enfers and Gertrude in Roméo et Juliette.
