Jeffrey Richard Carter is Professor & Chair of the Department of Music at Webster University in Saint Louis. He leads the unique program in Music Direction for Musical Theatre, and teaches musical theatre voice, music theory for musical theatre, and other courses in conducting and singing. Under his leadership, the Department of Music has developed and implemented new degree programs, significantly increased international study participation by students, and more than doubled the number of endowed scholarships supporting students. Active as an artist/teacher, composer, author, and singer, Carter is also conductor of the Variety Club Children’s Chorus in Saint Louis, and is Music Director/Composer for Circus Harmony at the City Museum.
Carter’s DMA in Choral Conducting is from the University of Kansas, and the MA from the University of Central Missouri. He led Ball State University Singers on national and international tours as director of that group for eight years. His research interests include American operetta, contemporary musical theatre, the choral music of Herbert Howells, and curriculum development in smaller liberal-arts programs.
