Bio

Sofia is a creative, motivated, goal-oriented student who demonstrates strong academic achievement and dedication to voice performance, leadership, and service. Sofia attended the prestigious North Carolina Governor's School for choral music in the summer of 2023. She is currently a senior vocal major at Weaver Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, a top-rated arts magnet in downtown Greensboro. Rated sixth in the state for academics, all classes at Weaver are Honors or AP level. Sofia holds a 4.3 GPA and enjoys dual enrollment courses at the local technical college. National Honors Society membership provides her with a platform for school involvement and volunteer service at school. Vocalists at Weaver Academy train together for 7.5 hours per week in class and also take private voice lessons. All vocal majors complete 12 -13 courses in voice and supporting music classes. The Weaver Chorale regularly wins top placement at national competitions in Orlando, Nashville, and New York and has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Vatican. Graduates of the Weaver Chorale have been finalists on America's Got Talent, and become Broadway performers and recording artists.

Sofia owes much of her development to her exceptional vocal instructor Jaclyn Surso. Surso has been her private voice teacher for six years and guided her in every aspect of voice performance. Ken Davis has been a huge support and inspiration to Sofie as well in piano, recording, and music theory. Sofia enjoys weekly sessions with both of these outstanding instructors.

On a personal note, Sofia's Hispanic background has influenced her journey greatly. Her father immigrated to the US in 1991. She has been raised in a bicultural (Spanish-American) and bilingual household where multiculturalism and diversity are the fabric of life. Sofia is dedicated to inclusion and diversity training and leadership. She serves as an ambassador for North Carolina for Community and Justice (NCCJ) having spent a week in the summer of 2022 in their diversity leadership training at Anytown. She dedicates time to her community as a Greensboro Science Center Docent educating the public about the animals and wildlife at the zoo and aquarium on site. As someone living with type 1 diabetes, Sofia serves as a state-level ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and is involved in the Diabetes Family Connection's summer camps called Camp Morris. Sofia is a big sister and future camp counselor to younger girls with T1D. Camp Morris' famous "Positive Mental Attitude" (PMA!) is something that she has internalized and now teaches to newly diagnosed youth.
