Lebanese-American mezzo-soprano Melanie Ashkar is known for the “rich texture” of her voice and her “delightfully expressive” stage presence. This season she appears with OperaDelaware, the Chesapeake Chorale and the National Presbyterian Church as a featured soloist. She recently completed a two-year residency at Utah Opera, where she appeared as Clotilde (Norma), Second Lady (The Magic Flute), The Fox (The Little Prince), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), and Ida (Die Fledermaus) on the mainstage. During her residency, she appeared with the Utah Symphony as a soloist in Handel's Messiah and Bernstein's Candide. She also spent two summers as a Bonfils-Stanton Apprentice Artist at Central City Opera, where she performed the roles of Third Lady (The Magic Flute) and La Madre (Madama Butterfly). Last season, Melanie received an Encouragement Award from the Nebraska District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Melanie has been featured with New York City Opera, Bel Cantanti Opera, Utopia Opera, and Mannes Opera, among others. Her favorite roles include Jo (Little Women), Olga (Eugene Onegin), Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia), Bradamante (Alcina) and Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte). A Washington, DC native, Melanie holds a BA in Music and Linguistics from the University of Virginia, an MS in Linguistics from Georgetown University, and an MM in Voice from Mannes College.
