Bio

Ecuadorian soprano María José Fabara is a passionate and versatile performer who has built a career spanning Latin America, and the United States. Since moving to Colorado in 2022, she has become a vibrant presence in the local music community, sharing her love for storytelling through music.

Recent opera highlights include her portrayal of Despina in Così fan tutte at the Crested Butte Music Festival, Barbarina in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Fort Collins, Frasquita in Bizet's Carmen for Opera Colorado's Student Matinee, Mimì in La Bohème with Steamboat Opera, Mariana in Illick's Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World with Central City Opera's outreach program, Tiresias in Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tirésias at Denver's Newman Center, and Violetta in La Traviata in Ecuador.

María’s versatility extends to musical theater, where she has portrayed Maria in West Side Story, Wendla in Spring Awakening, and the title role in the first Latin-American production of Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.

Her additional opera credits include Queen of the Night in Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Lisette in Puccini’s La Rondine with the Teatro Nacional Sucre in Quito, Ecuador; Flora in La Traviata with Wichita Grand Opera; and roles such as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Adina in L'elisir d'amore, and Héro in Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict at the Miller Concert Hall in Wichita, Kansas.

On the concert stage, María has performed Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Guayaquil Symphony Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah with the Wichita Choral Society, and Mozart’s Requiem with the Loja Symphony Orchestra.

María holds an Artist Diploma from the University of Denver, a Master’s in Opera Performance from Wichita State University, and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador.
