Bio

Sergey Martsenyuk is a baritone based in Toronto, Canada, known for his lush timbre and superior acting skills. Sergey has been studying privately with Vaguif Kerimov, a former soloist of La Scala di Milano Theatre, for over 10 years. In fact Vaguif and Sergey have frequently appeared on stage together, including “Summer’s Bloom Concert” at the Glenn Gould Studio, in 2014. Moreover, Sergey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University, where he majored in Theatre Studies. His operatic career begun in 2012 with Toronto Academy for Performing Arts, under professional guidance of Mary Liu. Sergey was featured as Commendatore in “Don Giovanni” and Monterone in Verdi’s “Rigoletto”, as well as Colline in “La Bohème” and Figaro in “Le Nozze di Figaro” as part of opera in concert series at the Columbus Centre for Performing Arts. In 2015 he was honoured to share the stage with a famed pianist, Rolando Nicolosi, at Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, Canada. This fateful encounter had a profound effect on Sergey, strengthening his resolute to become a professional opera singer. Subsequently, in 2017, Sergey appeared as Tonio in the full production of Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci” at Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts, and as Yeletski in Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades” at Roy Thomson Hall, with International Grand Music Studio. In 2018 Sergey performed a series of operatic excerpts with a troupe of talented guest artists from overseas including Marina Konovalova, Liutsia Italyanskaya, and Vladimir Vorobyev, at “Opera-Feeria Niagara Inspiration”, which took place at Mohawk College Theatre and Scotiabank Convention Center.

Sergey’s most recent engagements include appearing as Bartolo in “Le Nozze di Figaro” as part of the Trentino Music Festival, where he worked closely with David Gately and Neal Glenn and was applauded for his humorous interpretation of the character. Sergey has also covered roles such as Fernando in Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” for Opera York (2015); Seneca in “L’incoronazione di Poppea” at Trentino Music Festival (2022); and Escamillo in “Carmen” for Music-On-Site Incorporated (2022), where he also participated in the production of “Carmen” as part of the ensemble, at Sebits Auditorium, Friends University, in Wichita, Kansas.

Being a dedicated music scholar, some of the opera roles Sergey has studied include Don Giovanni from “Don Giovanni” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Renato from “Un Ballo di Mascherra” by Giuseppe Verdi; Mustafa from “L’italiana in Algerie” by Gioachinno Rossini; Yago from “Othello” by Giuseppe Verdi; Evgeni Onegin from “Evgeni Onegin” by Peter Tchaikovsky; Baculus from “Der Wildschutz” by Albert Lortzing; Igor from “Prince Igor” by Alexander Borodin; and Malatesta from “Don Pasquale” by Gaëtan Donizetti among others. Sergey is hoping to sing the following roles in the future: Mephistopheles from “Faust” by Charles Gounod; Rigoletto from “Rigoletto” by Giuseppe Verdi; and Caspar from “Der Freishutz” by Carl Maria von Webber.

Sergey Martsenyuk is also known for being a versatile musician, with extensive experience performing repertoire ranging from popular to classical music, including broadway and crossover. Sergey’s first performance in Canada took place at York Woods Library Theatre in Toronto, where he sang all-time favourites such as “Ave Maria” and “Allelujah” by Mozart. Sergey has also frequently appeared in the Global Village Festival at Mel Lastman Square with songs of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, as well as folk music. Sergey has also been performing on regular basis in Bernard Betel Centre with excerpts from Broadway and Classic Rock. As a result of his frequent appearances on stage and continued efforts, in 2018 Sergey was invited to sing Canadian National Anthem at an “International Invitational Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition, Koop Cup” at Markham Pan Am Centre. He was also a guest artist at “Azerbaijani Legend” with Tabriz Azerbaijani Music & Dance Ensemble at Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts in 2019. On top of regularly appearing in concerts and festivals, Sergey worked as a lounge singer at Cafe Veranda Restaurant, where he performed on weekly basis as well as on special occasions from 2019 to 2023.
