Bio

Janel Mercado is an American soprano from Texas. She graduated from Texas Tech University with her Bachelor of Arts in Music in May 2014 under the guidance of teacher Dr. Quinn Patrick Ankrum. She completed her Master of Music degree at the University of Minnesota in Duluth in May 2017 under the vocal training of Alice Pierce. Mercado made her opera debut with the Lyric Opera of the North as the Page in Verdi's Rigoletto. She is currently working as a voice teacher in the Houston Area for San Jacinto College and Alvin Community College.

Mercado's opera roles include Suor Angelica in Puccini's Suor Angelica (University of Minnesota- 2016), Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflote (University of Minnesota- 2015), Poppea in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea (Texas Tech-2014), Mrs. Segstrom in Sondheim's A Little Night Music ( Texas Tech- 2013), and Iolanthe in Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe (Texas Tech- 2013).

Janel Mercado won 2nd place in the Greater Houston NATS Competition in 2018. She won 2nd place in the Minnesota NATS Competition in 2015 and 2016. She also competed as a semi-finalist for the National NATS Competition in 2016. She won 2nd place in the TEXOMA Region of NATS in 2011. Mercado has also competed and won intercollegiate competitions through her college career.

Mercado is currently studying with vocal coach Evangelina Colon. She looks forward to continuing her career as an opera singer as well as a voice teacher.
