Bio

“The most vulnerable” classical tenor Mike Fan, whose "dramatic side is remarkable” (Barcza Blog) has performed in 11 languages “sung extremely well and acted even better” (Opera Ramblings) for organizations across North America, Europe, and Australia including Le Monument National, Opera York, and Toronto City Opera. Versatile in both concert and staged work, Mike’s recent opera roles include a “spectacular” title role of Mozart’s bravura version of Idomeneo, Sam Polk in Floyd’s Susannah, and Remendado in Bizet’s Carmen.

Initially trained as a classical pianist, Mike’s passion for song literature combines a love and appreciation of both voice and piano. Recent recital projects have included their Canadian Opera Company recital début in the iconic Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre for Asian Heritage Month; a culminating graduate recital Chez Pauline Viardot at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music fully funded by a prestigious $17,500 Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Masters); and the numerous recitals for Pacific Opera Victoria across British Columbia as a 2021-22 Civic Engagement artist.

Other recent engagements include their Scottish début at the invitation of the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom; creating the role of Inspecteur Receveur and his suspects in Infusion Baroque's murder-mystery Who Killed Leclair?; the world première of Chan Ka-Nin’s Dragon’s Tale co-produced by Tapestry Opera, Luminato Festival, Soundstreams, and Harbourfront Centre. Mike’s powerful, flexible tenor has received the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Gold Medal, Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques’ Prix Poulenc, and has been a finalist for the Canadian National Opera Auditions and semi-finalist for the Premiere Opera Foundation Competition. Mike has also competed for Oper im Berg’s Grandi Voci Competition in Austria, the Loren L. Zachary Society Competition at the Los Angeles Opera, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona’s Tenor Viñas Competition at the San Francisco and Metropolitan Operas.

Fluent in 7 languages, Mike holds degrees in Opera & Voice, Speech Arts & Drama, and Piano Performance as well as Biomedical Science with training at the Rossini Opera Festival and Finland’s Tampere Conservatoire.
