Anna Maria Noga is a Polish-American Soprano studying at Illinois Wesleyan University pursuing a Dual Degree for a BM in Vocal Performance and a BA in Environmental Studies.
Born in Illinois, Anna's parents moved to the United States from Poland in the early 2000s. Growing up and going to both English and Polish school, Anna grew a huge appreciation to both of her cultures which resulted in a growing curiosity of the music in both areas of the world. Being able to study the diverse styles in classical music in diverse cultures has been something that has interested her for awhile. Music is a language that is not so universal between cultures. Each culture finds its own way of expressing their values/identities.
Through her studies at Illinois Wesleyan University, Anna has done research on how nationalism is expressed in polish classical music. History impacts the arts and it is something important to look at when analyzing how diverse cultures express their identities/values through music in their own unique ways. Just as you can identify a composer by their unique stylistic musical choices, you can identify a specific cultures music depending on what musical choices they use to symbolize their identity.
Even though music is not a universal language. Anna has found that the use of nature is. She hopes to keep continuing her study of both music and nature to try and support how cultures can be diverse in musical language but there is a unity in using nature to express identity of diverse cultures in music whether that is through frequencies, imagery, poetry, or sounds of nature.
