Show Synopsis: Three sailors, Chip, Ozzie and Gabey, have 24 hours leave in New York City and want to find Ivy Smith, who Gabey has seen in magazines. Throughout the day, Chip falls in love with the taxi driver Hildy and Ozzie falls in love with the anthropologist Claire. Gabey finally finds Ivy, and the three men bid goodbye to their women as they head back to war. Character: Gabey, a young All-American Navy sailor who is determined to find Miss Turnstiles during his 24-hour leave in New York City; shy, romantic, and hopeful. Song Context: Gabey is waiting for Miss Turnstiles in Times Square, and he is excited beyond belief, even ignoring another woman trying to flirt with him. He takes in the sights and sounds of the city while he waits for her. Fun Facts: 1. This plot of this musical came out of Jerome Robbins' 1944 American Ballet Theatre ballet Fancy Free. 2. John Battles originated the role of Gabey on Broadway as his Broadway debut. 3. This song was composed and staged to show Jerome Robbins's concept for the ensemble, which is that their movement and dancing would be the action onstage, not just an explanation or augmentation of what was happening around Gabey.
"I used to think it might be fun to be Anyone else but me. I thought that it would be a pleasant surprise To wake up as a couple of other guys. But now that I've found you, I've changed my point of view, And now I wouldn't give a dime to be Anyone else but me. What a day, Fortune smiled and came my way, Bringing love I never thought I'd see, I'm so lucky to be me. What a night, Suddenly you came in sight, Looking just the way I'd hoped you'd be, I'm so lucky to be me. I am simply thunderstruck At the change in my luck: Knew at once I wanted you, Never dreamed you'd want me, too. I'm so proud You chose me from all the crowd, There's no other guy I'd rather be, I could laugh out loud, I'm so lucky to be me.
