Show Synopsis:
Five performers perform the songs of Thomas "Fats" Waller and celebrate his rise to fame from the big bands of the Cotton Club in Harlem. They celebrate all over New York City and question their love lives with his music, and try to address the heartache that lies beneath all of Waller's music.

Character:
Charlaine, a sweet and talented young woman in love with her man; very innocent and inexperienced in the ways of men.

Song Context:
While her friends are questioning each others' fidelity and relationships, Charlaine is positive she's going to stay with her boyfriend and wants to make him happy.

Fun Facts:
1. The concept for this musical originated when Murray Horwitz asked Richard Maltby, Jr. to listen to some rare Waller recordings and Maltby heard the wit and and spirit in the music that he felt could translate into a musical.
2. The names of the characters are the same as the actors who originated them. This song was sung by Charlaine Woodard in the original production, and she reprised her performance in the Broadway revival ten years later.
3. Andy Razaf co-wrote this song with Waller during a period of time when Waller was starting to perform more than compose his work.

"Don't even go to a movie show
If you're not by my side.
I stay home by my radio,
But I'm satisfied!
All my flirtin' days are gone,
On the level from now on!

Don't go for any excitement now-
Books are my best company.
All my opinions have changed somehow,
Old-fashioned as can be!
When you really learn to care,
There's a thrill in solitaire!

Keepin' out of mischief now,
Really am in love, and how!
I'm through playing with fire,
It's you whom I desire!

All the world can plainly see
You're the only one for me!
I've told them in advance
They can't break up our romance!
Living up to every vow,
I'm keepin' out of mischief now!

All the world can plainly see
That you're the only one for me!
Say I've told them, told them in advance
That they can't break up our romance!
Living up to every vow,
I'm keepin', keepin' out of mischief now!"
