Who rides so late through night and wind?

Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
It is the father with his child;

Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
He has the boy well (firmly) in his arm,

Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.
He holds him securely, he keeps him warm.

Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?
My son, what hide you so fearfully your face?

Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Do-you-see, father, the Erlkönig not?

Den Erlenkönig mit Kron and Schweif?
The Erlkönig with crown and train?

Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif.
My son, it is a fog-patch.

"Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir,
"You dear child, come, go with me,

Gar schöne Spiele spiel ich mit dir;
Very nice games play I with you;

Manch bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand, 
Many-a colorful flower are at the beach,

Meine Mutter hat manch gölden Gewand"
My mother has many-a golden dress"

Mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
My father, and hear you not,

Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?
What Erlkönig to-me softly promises?

Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind:
Be calm, remain calm, my child:

In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind.
In dry leaves rustles the wind.

"Willst feiner Knabe du mit mir gehn?
"Want-to, fine boy you with me go?

Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;
My daughters shall you attend beautifully;

Meine Töchter führen den nächtlichen Reihn
My daughters lead the nightly round-dance

Und wiegen und tanzen und singen dich ein."
And rock and dance and sing you to (sleep)."

Mein Vater, und siehst du nicht dort
My father, and see you not there

Erkönigs Töchter am düsteren Ort?
Erkönig's daughters at-the dark place?

Mein Sohn, ich seh es genau,
My son, I see it exactly,

Es scheinen die alten Weiden so grau.
It seems (to-be) the old willows so gray.

"Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt,
"I love you, me entices your beautiful figure,

Und bist du nicht willig, so brauch ich Gewalt."
And (if) are you not willing, then use I force."

"Mein Vater, jetzt faßt er mich an!
"My father, now touches he me!

Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan."
Erlkönig has to-me a hurt done."

Dem Vater grauset's. Er reitet geschwind,
The father (becomes) terrified. He rides fast,

Er hält in seinen Armen das ächzende Kind,
He holds in the arms the moaning child,

Erreicht den Hof mit Müh und Not;
Reaches the farm with pain and distress;

In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.
In his arms the child was dead.
