Show Synopsis:
The sorcerer Grigori Rasputin curses the Romanov family, initiating the revolution that will kill the family, and the youngest princess Anastasia escapes but is knocked unconscious in the chaos and her grandmother, the Dowager Empress, leaves Paris without her. Anastasia grows up as Anya in an orphanage with no memory of her life before that night, but she has a necklace that says "Together in Paris," which the Dowager Empress gave her right before the revolution. Dimitri and Vlad, two conmen, are searching for a young woman to pretend to be the lost princess Anastasia so that they can claim the Dowager Empress' reward money, and they coerce Anya into being their actress because of her physical resemblance to the princess. They are pursued by the woken demons at Rasputin's disposal all the way to Paris, but survive against all odds, and Anya and Dimitri begin to fall in love. Dimitri and Vlad, who used to work in the Romanov court, teach Anya everything she needs to know about being Anastasia, and in her preliminary interview with the Dowager Empress' cousin Sophie, she shows that she knows even more than what Dimitri and Vlad taught her. Dimitri, who helped her escape the palace as a child, realizes that Anya is actually the Princess Anastasia and that once she finds her family, she will forget all about him. Anya discovers that Dimitri and Vlad were looking to gain a reward from presenting her as the princess and angrily starts to leave Paris, but Dimitri, with no concern for the money, convinces the Dowager Empress to speak to Anya, and the women realize that they have been waiting for years to reunite. When Anya learns that Dimitri refused the Dowager Empress' reward, she runs after Dimitri to tell him she loves him, but Rasputin and his minions try to kill them. They survive and run away together, since Anya wanted family, not royalty, and feels that she has that with Dimitri.

Character:
Anya, an eighteen-year-old orphan who wants to find her family more than anything; stubborn and skeptical.

Song Context:
Anya has just left the orphanage she grew up in to go work in a fish factory, but on her way there, she realizes that she has a choice for the first time in her life, and if she follows a different path, she could go to the train station in St. Petersburg instead. Her only key to her past is a necklace that says "Together in Paris," and if she ever wants to discover where she comes from and who her family is, she knows she should not go to a fish factory where she will be miserable for the rest of her life.

Fun Facts:
1) This movie musical is based loosely on the real life events of the Bolshevik Revolution and the widespread belief for many years that Anastasia, the youngest Romanov princess, might have survived in hiding while the rest of her family was shot to death.
2) The character of Anya had two different voice actors - musical theatre actor and vocalist Liz Callaway gave her a singing voice and acclaimed film actor Meg Ryan spoke her dialogue.
3) This song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song but lost to Titanic's "My Heart Will Go On"

"Heart don't fail me now,
Courage don't desert me,
Don't turn back now that we're here.
People always say
Life is full of choices -
No one ever mentions fear
Or how the world can seems so vast
On a journey to the past.

Somewhere down this road,
I know someone's waiting.
Years of dreams just can't be wrong.
Arms will open wide,
I'll be safe and wanted,
Finally home where I belong.
Well starting now, I'm learning fast
On this journey to the past.

Home, love, family,
There was once a time
I must've had them too.
Home, love, family,
I will never be complete until I find you.

One step at a time,
One hope then another.
Who knows where this road may go?
Back to who I was,
Onto find my future,
Things my heart still needs to know!
Yes, let this be a sign!
Let this road be mine!
Let it lead me to my past
And bring me home
At last!"
