Alessandro Scarlatti (1660*-1725): Le violette (from the opera [Il] Pirro e Demetrio) (1694) Text: Adriano Morselli Recorded (Schirmer Medium High) Key: B-flat Major Original (1694) Key: A Major Teach-Track begins: m. 1 Accompaniment Track begins: m. 1 Pianist: Daniel Michalak N. B. This recording features the version of ?Le violette? that appears in the G. Schirmer anthology of 24 Italian Songs and Arias (LB 1722). It differs so substantially from the original version (which appears in the John Glenn Paton [ed.] edition of 26 Italian Songs and Arias [Alfred Publishing Co., Van Nuys, CA, 1991]) that the Paton edition cannot be used successfully with this recording. * This birthdate according to The New Grove?s Dictionary of Music and Musicians (Macmillan, London, 1980, ed. Stanley Sadie). The date of 1659 given in the Schirmer anthologies 24 Italian Songs and Arias and Anthology of Italian Song has since been revised by more recent scholarship. Rugiadose Dewy Odorose Fragrant Violette graziose, Violets charming, Voi vi state vergognose, You yourselves stand modest, Mezzo ascose fra le foglie, Half hidden among the foliage, E sgridate le mie voglie, And you ridicule my desires, Che son troppo ambiziose. Which are too ambitious.
