Song of the Elf

Bei Nacht im Dorf der Wächter rief: ?Elfe!?
At night in the village the watchman cried: ?Eleven?

Ein ganz kleines Elfchen im Walde schlief
A very small elf in the wood slept

Wohl um die Elfe! 
Around the eleven (o?clock)!

Und meint es rief ihm aus dem Tal
And believes it called him from the valley

Bei seinem Namen die Nachtigall,
By his name the nightingale,

Oder Silpelit hätt ihm gerufen.
Or Silpelit (elf queen) had him called.

Reibt sich der Elf die Augen aus,
Rubs himself the eyes (out)

Begibt sich vor sein Schneckenhaus
Goes himself out front his snail shell (house)

Und ist als wie ein trunken Mann,
And is as a drunken man,

Sein Schläflein war nicht voll getan,
His nap was not fully completed,

Und humpelt also, tippe, tapp,
And hobbles that way, tip, tap, 

Durchs Haselholz ins Tal hinab,
Through the hazel wood into the valley down,

Schlupft an der Mauer hin so dicht,
Creeps at the wall along so closely,

Da sitzt der Glühwurm Licht an Licht.
There sit the glowworm light by light.

?Was sind das helle Fensterlein?
?What are those bright little windows?

Da drin wird eine Hochzeit sein:
In there will a wedding be:

Die Kleinen sitzen beim Mahle
The little ones sit at the banquet

Und treibens in dem Saale.
And enjoy themselves in the hall.

Da guck ich wohl ein wenig ?nein?
There look I a little in.

Pfui, stößt den Kopf an harten Stein!
Ouch, hits the head at hard rock!

Elfe gelt, du hast genug?
Elf well, you have enough?

Gukuk!
Cuckoo!
