Tu die Augen zu!
close your eyes!

Wandrer, du müder, du bist zu Haus.
Wanderer, you tired (one), you are at home.

Die Treu' ist hier,
The faith is here,

Sollst liegen bei mir,
you should lie by me,

Bis das Meer will trinken die Bächlein aus.
Until the sea will drink the brook (dry)

Will betten dich kühl
I will cover you cool  (make you a cool bed)

Auf weichem Pfühl
on a soft cushion

In dem blauen kristallenen Kämmerlein.
In the blue crystalline chamber.

Heran, heran,
Come on, come on,

Was wiegen kann,
Who cradle can,

Woget und wieget den Knaben mir ein!
Rock and cradle the boy me in! (to sleep!) 

Wenn ein Jagdhorn schallt
When a hunting-horn sounds

Aus dem grünen Wald,
from the green forest,

Will ich sausen und brausen wohl um dich her.
Will I rush and rustle well around you.
 
Blickt nicht herein,
Look not in,

Blaue Blümelein!
Blue little flowers!

Ihr macht meinem Schläfer die Träume so schwer.
You make my slumbering one?s the dreams so heavy.

Hinweg, hinweg

Von dem Mühlensteg,
from the mill?s bridge,

Böses Mägdelein, daß ihn dein Schatten nicht weckt!
bad little maiden, that him your shadow not wakes!

Wirf mir herein
Throw to me in

Dein Tüchlein fein,
your little scarf fine,

Daß ich die Augen ihm halte bedeckt.

Der Vollmond steigt,
The full moon climbs,

Der Nebel weicht,
the mist fades,

Und der Himmel da oben, wie ist er so weit!
and the heaven there up, how is it so far!
