Show Synopsis:
Harry Aiken remembers a past New Year?s Eve when he was spurned by a woman just like the current hotel patron Cynthia Brookfield-Bailey for Dr. Josef Winkler. Other guests at the Barclay Palace Hotel believe in love but many of the men are not as easily persuaded. Winkler cheats on Cynthia copiously but always comes back to her. Harry begins to believe that Cynthia is supposed to be all the girls of his past. A nearby air base appears to be the target of a military attack, and Harry is upset that Cynthia is leaving and his performances are ending. As other guests start getting married because of an uncertain future, Cynthia asks Winkler to get married but he leaves. Harry yells at her and leaves too, but as the last bus leaves for safety, Harry returns because she wants to be with Cynthia.

Character:
Harry Aiken, an arrogant middle-aged showman who longs for love.

Song Context:
Although Cynthia is denying that she and Harry have had any dalliances in the past, Harry is convinced that his memory is infallible on this point, and he strongly believes Cynthia is his former lover, or many of them mixed up at once.

Fun Facts:
1) This musical is based on Robert E. Sherwood's 1936 play Idiot's Delight.
2) This musical was an unfortunate flop for bookwriter/lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, only playing 25 preview performances and opening night on Broadway before closing.
3) Len Cariou originated the role of Harry on Broadway.

"There's always one you can't forget.
There's always one you can't forget,
One who roams around your mind,
One you cannot leave behind.

Other smiles seem painted on;
Other nights are here and gone;
Other loves become a blur;
In other arms you think of her.
Across a room, along the street,
You always hope perhaps you'll meet.

Why? Why won't it die?
You try, and yet you can't forget,
You can't forget, you can't forget.

Other smiles seem painted on;
Other nights are here and gone;
Other loves become a blur;
In other arms you think of her.
Across a room, along the street,
You always hope perhaps you'll meet.
Why? Why won't it die?
You try, and yet you can't forget,
You can't forget, you can't forget."
