Impatience

Ich schnitt es gern in alle Rinden ein,
I?d like to cut in all the barks,

Ich grüb es gern in jeden Kieselstein,
I?d like to scoop out in every pebble,

Ich möcht es sä'n auf jedes frische Beet
I would like to sow it in every fresh field

Mit Kressensamen, der es schnell verrät,
With cress seeds, that would quickly show it,

Auf jeden weißen Zettel möcht ich's schreiben:
On every white paper would like I to write:

Dein ist mein Herz und soll es ewig bleiben.
Yours is my heart and so shall it forever remain.

Ich möcht mir ziehen einen jungen Star,
I?d like to me pull (train) a young star,

Bis daß er spräch die Worte rein und klar,
until he was speaking the words pure and clear,

Bis er sie spräch mit meines Mundes Klang,
until he was speaking with my mouth sound,

Mit meines Herzens vollem, heißem Drang;
with my heart full, hot urge;

Dann säng er hell durch ihre Fensterscheiben:
then would sing he brightly through her windowpanes: 

Dein ist mein Herz und soll es ewig bleiben.

Den Morgenwinden möcht ich's hauchen ein,
The morning wind would like I to breath into,

Ich möcht es säuseln durch den regen Hain;
I?d like to whisper it through the stirring grove;

Oh, leuchtet' es aus jedem Blumenstern!
Oh, shone it from every flower! 

Trüg es der Duft zu ihr von nah und fern!
Wore it the sent to her from near and far!

Ihr Wogen, könnt ihr nichts als Räder treiben?
Your billows, can you not to the wheels float?

Dein ist mein Herz und soll es ewig bleiben.

Ich meint, es müßt in meinen Augen stehn,
I  mean, it must in my eyes stand,

Auf meinen Wangen müßt man's brennen sehn,
On my cheeks must one burn see (one must see the burn of my cheeks)

Zu lesen wär's auf meinem stummen Mund,
To read would it on my mute mouth,

Ein jeder Atemzug gäb's laut ihr kund,
every breath it gives loudly known to her, (every breath proclaims aloud to her)

Und sie merkt nichts von all dem bangen Treiben:
And she notices not from all the anxious activity:

Dein ist mein Herz und soll es ewig bleiben.
