Heidenröslein
Heather Rose Little

Sah ein Knab' ein Röslein stehn,
Saw a boy a little rose stand,

Röslein auf der Heiden,
Little rose in the heather,

War so jung und morgenschön,
Was so young and morning-beautiful,

Lief er schnell, es nah' zu seh'n,
Went he fast, it close to see,

Sah?s mit vielen Freuden.
Saw it with many joys.

Röslein rot, Röslein auf der Heiden.
Little rose red, little rose in the heather.

Knabe sprach: ?Ich breche dich,
Boy said: ?I break (pluck) you,

Röslein auf der Heiden!?
Little rose in the heather!?

Röslein sprach: ?Ich steche dich,
Little rose said: ?I prick you,

Daß du ewig denkst an mich,
That you forever think of me,

Und ich will?s nicht leiden.?
And I want [it] not to suffer.?

Und der wilde Knabe brach ?s
And the wild boy broke (plucked) it

Röslein auf der Heiden;
The little rose in the heather,

Röslein wehrte sich und stach,
Little rose defended itself and pricked,

Half ihm doch kein Weh und Ach,
Helped it (the rose) but little [its cries of] "Woe" and oh,

Mußt' es eben leiden.
Must (had to) it just to suffer.
