Was ist Silvia, saget an,
What is Silvia, say it, 

daß sie die weite Flur preist?
that she the wide world praises?

Schön und zart seh ich sie nah'n,
Beautiful and tender see I her approach,

auf Himmelsgunst und Spur weist,
by Heaven?s favor and mark is shown,
 
daß ihr alles untertan.
that to her all are subject. 

Ist sie schön und gut dazu?
Is she beautiful and good also?

Reiz labt wie milde Kindheit;
Charm refreshing like gentle childhood;

ihrem Aug' eilt Amor zu,
to her eyes hurries Cupid to, 

dort heilt er seine Blindheit
there heals he his blindness

und verweilt in süßer Ruh.
and lingers in sweet rest. 

Darum Silvia, tön, o Sang,
Therefore Silvia, sound, oh song, 

der holden Silvia Ehren;
to the sweet Silvia honors; 

jeden Reiz besiegt sie lang,
every charm has conquered she long since,

Den Erde kann gewähren:
that Earth can grant:

Kränze ihr und Saitenklang!
