Show Synopsis: An old enchantress named Gothel hides away a magic flower that will keep her young so that no one else will ever use it, but a king needs it for medicine for her sick and pregnant queen. When the baby is born, her blonde hair has healing properties from the flower, and Gothel steals the baby to keep the power for herself. The king and queen release floating lanterns every year on their daughter's birthday in hopes that she will know they are for her and find her way home. Gothel never lets the princess Rapunzel leave her tower, but one day she captures the thief Flynn Rider with a stolen tiara who seeks refuge in her tower. Rapunzel blackmails Flynn into taking her to see the floating lanterns which always mysteriously appear in the distance on her birthday in exchange for the tiara. Gothel finds out what has happened and tells the Stabbington Brothers, who are looking for the tiara, that they can help each other find Rapunzel and Flynn. Rapunzel and Flynn begin to fall in love, but the Stabbington Brothers capture Flynn and tell Rapunzel he betrayed her, so she returns to her tower with Gothel. Rapunzel realizes she is the lost princess and Gothel locks her up to avoid running away. Flynn escapes and rescues her but Gothel stabs him, leaving Rapunzel to beg Gothel to save him and keep her forever. Flynn cuts off Rapunzel's hair so that she can be free forever, and Gothel dies without any power tethering her to the world. Flynn and Rapunzel declare their love for each other, and as Flynn dies, Rapunzel cries on him, not knowing that her tears still have healing powers. Flynn survives and marries Rapunzel, who is reunited with her parents. Character: Rapunzel, an eighteen-year-old girl who has been sheltered in a tower for her entire life and is ecstatic to be outside; feisty and smart; Flynn Rider, a handsome thief and conman who likes to impress ladies and dreams of being rich; is secretly insecure about aspects of himself and life. Song Context: Rapunzel has had the best day of her life, and she is beginning to fall for Flynn, just as he is falling for her. This song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song. 3. Alan Menken and Glenn Slater originally wrote a song called "You Are My Everything" that was going to appear in two versions - one about Rapunzel and Gothel's relationship as mother and daughter and a reprise between Flynn and Rapunzel about their love. That song was later put aside for this one and "Mother Knows Best."
