Show Synopsis: Aspiring composer Karl travels to Munich with his collaborator?s daughter Sieglinde, who is in love with him, to get a song published. Operetta star Frieda Hatzfeld falls in love with Karl and Sieglinde falls in love with Bruno Mahler, who lives with her. Mahler asks Sieglinde to perform in his new piece and Frieda moves out to be closer to Karl. Mahler is frustrated that his flirtations with Sieglinde aren?t going anywhere, and Frieda feels the same way about Karl. Frieda goes Berlin to star in a film and Mahler wants to replace her with Sieglinde, but she is very obviously too inexperienced to handle the role and the pressure. Mahler begins to lose interest in her, so she and Karl leave Munich as a couple and much wiser than when they arrived, and Frieda returns and performs the role wonderfully. Character: Karl Reder, a naive small town schoolteacher who believes the beautiful and sophisticated city of Munich holds the key to his future and his happiness. Song Context: Karl and Sieglinde prepare for their journey to the bustling city of Munich. Fun Facts: 1. This song has been recorded by many popular artists, most notably Linda Scott in 1961, as well as Bing Crosby, Irene Dunne, and The Drifters. 2. The role of Karl was originally played by Walter Slezak, an Austrian character actor and classical vocalist. 3. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II knew that they had to write a song that would be a hit on the radio as well as good for the show. Kern wrote down a melody listening to a sparrow outside his window on Cape Cod one morning, and it evolved into this song.
"I make up things to say on my way to you. On my way to you, I find things to say. I can write poems, too, when you're far away. When you're far away, I write poems, too. But when you are near, my throat goes dry. When you are near, I only sigh, oh dear. I've told ev'ry little star Just how sweet I think you are. Why haven't I told you? I've told ripples in a brook, Made my heart an open book. Why haven't I told you? Friends ask me am I in love, I always answer ?Yes."" Might as well confess. If I don't, they guess. Maybe you may know it, too Oh, my darling, if you do Why haven't you told me, dear Why haven't you told me? But when you are near, my throat goes dry When you are near, I only sigh, oh dear I've told ev'ry little star Just how sweet I think you are Why haven't I told you Why haven't, why haven't I told you I've told ripples in a brook Made my heart an open book Why haven't I told you Each time I hold you Friends ask me if I'm in love I always answer ""Yes"" Might as well confess For if I don't, they guess Maybe you may know it too But oh, my darling, if you do Why haven't you told me Ooooohhhhh-aaaaahhhhh"
