Whither?

Ich hört' ein Bächlein rauschen
I heard a little brook rushing

Wohl aus dem Felsenquell,
well out of the rock source,

Hinab zum Tale rauschen
Down to the valley it bubbles

So frisch und wunderhell.
so fresh and wonder-bright.

Ich weiß nicht, wie mir wurde,
I do not know, how to me has been, (as I was)

Nicht, wer den Rat mir gab,
Not, who the counsel to me gave,

Ich mußte auch hinunter
I had to also down

Mit meinem Wanderstab.
with my walking stick.

Hinunter und immer weiter
Down and always further

Und immer dem Bache nach,
and always to the brook after,
 
Und immer frischer rauschte
and always freshly rustled

Und immer heller der Bach.
and always bright the brook.

Ist das denn meine Straße?
Is the then my street?

O Bächlein, sprich, wohin?
O brooklet, speak, where?
 
Du hast mit deinem Rauschen
You have with your rustling

Mir ganz berauscht den Sinn.
Me completely intoxicated the mind. 

Was sag ich denn vom Rauschen?
What say I then about the rushing?

Das kann kein Rauschen sein:
That can no rushing be:

Es singen wohl die Nixen
It sings like the nixies (water fairies) 

Tief unten ihren Reihn.
Deep under their stream.

Laß singen, Gesell, laß rauschen
Let (keep) singing, let (keep) rushing, 

Und wandre fröhlich nach!
and wander gladly along!

Es gehn ja Mühlenräder
It goes yes the mill wheels (There are mill wheels moving)

In jedem klaren Bach
in every clear stream.
