Poiche in iscena ancor
Since on (the) stage again

le antiche maschere mette l'autore,
the author puts the old masks,

in parte ei vuol riprendere le vecchie usanze,
in part, he wishes to-take-again the old customs,

e a voi di nuovo inviami.
and to you again he-sends-me.

Ma non per dirvi come pria:
But not to tell-you as before:

"Le lacrime che noi versiam son false!
"The tears that we shed are false!

Degli spasimi e de' nostri martir
By our sufferings and by our torments

non allarmatevi." No.
(do) not alarm-yourselves." No.

L'autore ha cercato invece
The-author has searched instead

pingervi uno squarcio di vita.
to-paint-for-you a slice of life.

Egli ha per massima sol che l'artista e un uom,
He has for (his) maxim only that the-artist is a man,

e che per gli uomini scrivere ei deve,
and that for men he must write,

ed al vero ispiravasi.
and (with)the truth he inspired-himself.

Un nido di memorie in fondo a l'anima
A nest of memories in (the) depth (of) his soul

cantava un giorno, ed ei con vere lacrime scrisse,
sang one day, and he with real tears wrote,

e i singhiozzi il tempo gli battevano!
and the sobs beat the time for-him!

Dunque, vedrete amar
Now-then, you-will-see (men) love

si come s'amano gli esseri umani
just as human beings themselves love,

vedrete de l'odio i tristi frutti,
you-will-see the wretched fruits of hatred,

del dolor gli spasimi,
spasms of sadness,

urli di rabbia, udrete, e risa ciniche!
howls of rage, you-will-hear, and cynical laughter!

E voi, piuttosto che le nostre povere gabbane d'istrioni,
and you, rather than our poor garb of-actors,

le nostr'anime considerate,
consider our-souls,

poiche siam uomini di carne e d'ossa,
since we-are men of flesh and of-bone,

e che di quest'orfano mondo
and that of this-orphan world

al pari di voi spiriamo l'aere!
we-breathe the same air as you!
