Auf, hebe die funkelnde Schale empor zum Mund,
Come on, lift the sparkling goblet up to the mouth,

Und trinke beim Freudenmahle dein Herz gesund.
And drink at the joyous feast your heart to health.

Und wenn du sie hebst, so winke mir heimlich zu;
And when you it lift, then wink to me secretly;

Dann lächle ich und dann trinke ich still wie du...
Then smile I and then drink I quietly like you...

Und still gleich mir betrachte um uns 
And calmly like me observe around us

Das Heer der trunknen Zecher,
The host of intoxicated drinkers,

Verachte sie nicht zu sehr, 
Despise them not too much,

Nein, hebe die blinkende Schale gefüllt mit Wein,
No, lift the sparkling goblet filled with wine,

Und laß beim lärmenden Mahle sie glücklich sein.
And let at the rousing feast them happy be.

Doch hast du das Mahl genossen, den Durst gestillt,
But (after) have you the meal enjoyed, the thirst quenched,

Dann verlasse der lauten Genossen festfreudiges Bild,
Then leave the noisy comrades' festive joyous scene,

Und wandle hinaus in den Garten zum Rosenstrauch;
And walk out into the garden to the rose bush;

Dort will ich dich dann erwarten, nach altem Brauch,
There will I you then await, according to the old custom,

Und will an die Brust dir sinken, eh' du's gehofft,
And shall at the breast to you sink, before you it hoped,

Und deine Küsse trinken, wie ehmals oft,
And your kisses drink, as formerly often (I have)

Und flechten in deine Haare der Rose Pracht, 
And braid into your hair, the rose's splendor,

O komm, du wunderbare, ersehnte Nacht!
